Compose & Reply

To compose a new message or reply to an existing message:

Click the name of the discussion topic you would like to compose a message for or reply to.


From here, the instructions will change depending on what action you are performing and what view you are using in the Discussions tool:


Compose a Message - Reading Style

To compose a new message while in Reading Style, click the Start a New Thread button.


On the message screen, you can:

1. Click the Show Description link to show the topic's description.

2. Enter the Subject of your message.

3. Enter the text of your message using the HTML editor.

4. Optional: Check the box to the left of Pin thread to pin this message to the top of the discussion topic. A pinned message thread will remain the topmost message regardless of any new message posts or changes to sorting.

5. Optional: Check the box to the left of Subscribe to this thread to subscribe to this specific message thread. If subscribed, you will be notified of all activity related to this message thread.

6. Optional: Click the Add attachments link to expand the options available for adding attachments to your message

  • Upload: You may drag and drop files from your computer into the target area or you can click the Upload button to select files located on your computer.
  • Record Audio: Click the Record Audio button to record an audio clip up to 10 minutes long. This option requires you to have a functioning microphone and Adobe Flash installed on your computer.
  • Choose Existing: Click the Choose Existing button if you would like to add a file from within the Manage Files area of your D2L course site.

7. Optional: Click the Post to other topics links to post this message to multiple discussion topics simultaneously.

8. Click the Post button to post your message to the discussion topic.

Compose a Message - Grid View

To compose a new message while in Grid View, click the Start a New Thread button.


On the message screen, you can:

1. Click the Show Description link to show the topic's description.

2. Enter the Subject of your message.

3. Enter the text of your message using the HTML editor.

4. Optional: Check the box to the left of Pin thread to pin this message to the top of the discussion topic. A pinned message thread will remain the topmost message regardless of any new message posts or changes to sorting.

5. Optional: Check the box to the left of Subscribe to this thread to subscribe to this specific message thread. If subscribed, you will be notified of all activity related to this message thread.

6. Optional: Click the Add attachments link to expand the options available for adding attachments to your message

Reply to a Message - Reading Style

To reply to a message while in Reading Style:

1. Click the subject of the message you'd like to reply to.


2. Click the Reply to Thread button.


On the message screen, you can:

3. Enter a new Subject for your message.

4. Enter the text of your message using the HTML editor.

5. Optional: Check the box to the left of Subscribe to this thread to subscribe to this specific message thread. If subscribed, you will be notified of all activity related to this message thread.

Reply to a Message - Grid View

To reply to a message while in Grid View:

1. Click the subject of the message you'd like to reply to or edit.


2. A pop-up window appears. Click the Reply button.


The message screen will display. In this area, you can:

3. Enter a new Subject for your message.

4. Enter the text of your message or if in Edit mode, edit the text of your existing message using the HTML editor.

5. Optional: Click the Add original post text link to add text from the message you are replying to.

6. OptionalAdd Attachments to your message using one of the methods below:

  • Add a File: Click the Add a File button to select files located on your computer.
  • Record Audio: Click the Record Audio button to record an audio clip up to 3 minutes long. This option requires you to have a functioning microphone and Adobe Flash installed on your computer.
  • Record Video: Click the Record Video button if record a video clip up to 3 minutes long. This option requires you to have a functioning webcam and microphone and Adobe Flash installed on your computer.

7. Click the Post button to post your reply to the message thread.


 


Edit a Message - Grid View

To edit a message while in Grid View:

1. Click the subject of the message you'd like to reply to or edit.


2. A pop-up window appears. Click the Edit Post button.


The message screen will display. In this area, you can:

3. Enter a new Subject for your message.

4. Edit the text of your existing message using the HTML editor.

5. Optional: Click the Pin post text link to pin the post to the top of the Message List for the topic for all users.

6. OptionalAdd Attachments to your message using one of the methods below:

  • Add a File: Click the Add a File button to select files located on your computer.
  • Record Audio: Click the Record Audio button to record an audio clip up to 3 minutes long. This option requires you to have a functioning microphone and Adobe Flash installed on your computer.
  • Record Video: Click the Record Video button if record a video clip up to 3 minutes long. This option requires you to have a functioning webcam and microphone and Adobe Flash installed on your computer.

7. Click the Save button to post your edited post to the message thread.
