Troubleshooting Quiz Grading

A common problem instructors have with quizzes is that the quiz scores are not transferring to the course's grade book. There are generally two ways this problem presents itself:

Quiz scores won't transfer to the D2L grade book

When quiz scores won't transfer to the D2L grade book there are usually two possible causes. Quiz scores will not transfer to the D2L grade book if either or both of the following are true:

1. The quiz hasn't been connected to a grade item and/or it hasn't been set to automatically export grades.
2. Quiz scores haven't been published.

To determine if your quiz has been set up correctly to export quiz scores to the grade book:

1. Click the name of the quiz for which you'd like to view settings.

2. Click the Assessment tab.

3. Make sure that the following have been completed:

  • A Grade Item has been selected
  • The box under Automatic Grade has been checked.
  • The box under Auto Export to Grades has been checked

4A. If all three had been done previously (you had to make no changes), click the Save and Close button to exit the quiz settings and visit our Published quiz scores won't transfer to the D2L grade book troubleshooting section.

4B. If ONLY the box under Automatic Grade had been checked previously, select a Grade Item, check the box under Auto Export to Grades, and click the Save and Close button to save your changes and exit the quiz settings. Then visit our Published quiz scores won't transfer to the D2L grade book troubleshooting section.

4C. If ONLY the box under Automatic Grade had NOT been checked (a Grade Item was selected and the box under Auto Export to Grades had been checked), check the box under Automatic Grade then click the Save and Close button to save your changes and exit the quiz settings. This will ensure that quiz scores will export to the grade book from this point forward. Continue to Step 5.

5. From the main Manage Quizzes page, click the down arrow to the right of the quiz you'd like to view attempts for and select Grade.

6. At the top of your list of participants, on the far right side, click the Select icon. This will set all attempts as published.

7. Click the Save button to save your changes and export your grades from the quiz to the grade book.

8. Depending on your display settings, you may need to repeat Steps 6 and 7 for every page of participants you have listed.

Tip: Use the per page drop down menu to select the highest number of participants possible to reduce the number of pages of participants you have.

Published quiz scores won't transfer to the D2L grade book

This is a known issue in the current version of D2L. It occurs when a quiz is set up to automatically set quiz attempts as graded (also known as publishing) and NOT to automatically export to the D2L grade book before the quiz opens to participants. When an instructor connects a grade item to a quiz and checks the Auto Export to Grades box AFTER participants have completed quiz attempts, the published quiz scores are not transferred to the grade book. To correct this:

1. Click the down arrow to the right of the quiz you would like to publish scores for and select Grade.

2. At the top of your list of participants, on the far right side, click the Select icon. This should uncheck all the boxes in the Published column.

3. Click the Save button to save your changes. This will unpublish all quiz scores.

4. Click the Select icon again to re-check all the boxes in the Published column.

5. Click the Save button to save your changes. This will re-publish all quiz scores and send them to the grade book

6. Depending on your display settings, you may need to repeat Steps 2-5 for every page of participants you have listed.

Tip: Use the per page drop down menu to select the highest number of participants possible to reduce the number of pages of participants you have.
