Add/Edit Questions

Please Note: While it is possible to create questions directly in the quiz, we suggest that you build your questions within the Question Library first, then import them into your quiz. For assistance creating questions in the Question Library, visit the Question Library help page

.

For help using the different types of questions available in D2L, visit our Creating Questions help pages. Once you have created your questions, return to the Quizzes tool and follow the directions below to import your questions.

To add questions to you quiz or to edit existing questions within your quiz:

1. Click the Add/Edit Questions button.

Next, determine how you would like to organize your quiz referencing the four options belown. Click the link that corresponds with how you want to configure your quiz for the corresponding directions.

Option 1: Import your questions into Random Sections

If you want to randomly draw a specified number of questions from a larger pool of questions (for example: use 20 out of 30 questions in the exam) you will need to create a Random Section in your quiz. You would then import your questions into this Random Section. It is important to note that you will need to create multiple Random Section folders if you need to group questions by question type, point value, difficulty etc.

Option 2: Import your questions into Sections

If you do not want to randomize your questions, but would like to organize them by question type, point value, difficulty, etc. you will instead need to create a standard Section. You will need to build a standard section to match the organizational requirements of your quiz (for example, if you want to group your T/F, Multiple choice and Matching questions together you would create 3 sections, one for each type).

Option 3: Import questions directly into the quiz

If you do not need to organize your questions as described in options 1 and 2 above, you can simply import questions directly into the quiz without building a Section or Random Section. In this case you can skip step 2 and proceed to directions immediately following it.

Option 4: Shuffle the order of questions in your quiz

Use this option after you have added questions to your Quiz. With a single click, you can shuffle the order of your questions. This option will also shuffle the order of Sections (Option 2 below) or Random Sections (Option 1 below) in your quiz.

Option 5: Shuffle the order of questions within a section

Use this option to create a subset of questions that will be shuffled. For example, you may want to group all of your Multiple Choice questions in a shuffled section at the start of the quiz, followed by a set of essay questions that appear in the same order for every student.

Then choose either display section message and image once or repeat section message and image before each question, depending on how frequently you want the image and/or message to appear.

14. When finished, click the Save button.

You will be directed to a page displaying the list of all imported questions. From within this page you have the following options:

Random Section Import Options

15. Questions per attempt: Specify how many questions from this Random Section you would like to appear in the quiz. If you want to use all of your questions, within the quiz type the number of questions you have in this box (for example, in the screenshot at right there are 3 questions, so typing a 3 in this field tells D2L to use all 3 questions).

16. Points each: Set the point value for all questions within this random section (default value is 1 point each).

17. Click the Save button to apply these changes.

18. Click the Done Editing Questions button to return to the Quiz Properties page.

Tip:  Using less than the total number of questions available in the quiz can help minimize cheating. For example, if you import 30 questions into the Random Section and tell D2L to only use 20 of them, it will randomly pull 20 of your 30 questions into each participants quiz attempt, creating a slightly different quiz for each participant.

From within the Quiz Properties page, you will see that the Quiz Questions section now contains your new Random Section and questions. The following options now exist for this section:

Setting number of questions per page and preventing backward page movement in quiz

19. In the Questions per page field, type in the number of questions you would like to appear on a page, then click the Apply button. You will see a blue line for each page break in the quiz (see the screenshot as an example).

20. If you want to prevent participants from being able to move backwards in the quiz to review/revisit their previously answered questions, check the Paging: Prevent moving backwards through pages checkbox.

Tip: We suggest placing 5 or fewer questions per page. This helps participants by autosaving their answers as they move through the pages of the quiz.

'Save and Close' and 'Save' buttons21. When finished, click the Save button to save and remain within the quiz or the Save and Close button to save and exit the quiz.
