To copy from a course site, you must be on or added to its Classlist with the role of Instructor or Instructor Read Copy.
Note: In most cases, when materials are copied twice, D2L does not overwrite what is already there. Instead, it duplicates the preexisting contents. See table, below.

1. Copy: All course components from one course to another
Copy a previous course site to a new one.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to copy materials TO and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click Search for offering.
- Click the magnifying glass icon to search. It is not necessary to enter a search term, but may narrow your results.
- Select the course you want to copy and click Add Selected.
- Click Copy All Components.
2. Copy: Specific components from one course to another
Copy parts of a course site to a new one: for example, just the grade book or content.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to copy materials TO and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click Search for offering.
- Click the magnifying glass icon to search. It is not necessary to enter a search term, but may narrow your results.
- Select the course you want to copy and click Add Selected.
- Click Select Components.
- Select the course materials you would like to copy:
All items in a category can be copied (all of content, for example) or you can copy individual items within a category (for example just one specific module in content) by clicking Select individual items to copy option.
- Click Continue.
- If you did not select the Select individual items to copy option, click the Finish button*.
a. *If you selected the Select individual items to copy option, select the items you wish to copy with the check boxes to the left of the items.
b. Click Continue.
c. Click Finish.
3. Import: Import a course from another Learning Management System
Import a course into D2L that has been exported out from another Learning Management System.
Course packages from other Learning Management Systems can be imported into D2L. The Learning Management System from which the package comes must produce an IMS CP or QTI (if importing quizzes) compliant course package. This will be a zipped file folder.
Note: Course packages from the following platforms can be imported: Blackboard 6/7/8/9, Moodle v. 1.9/2/3, Pearson eCollege and UCompass.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to import materials TO and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Select Import Components.
- Verify from a course package is selected.
- Click Start.
- Drag and drop the package file exported out of the prior Learning Management system or click Upload and navigate to the file on your computer. Depending on the size of the package it could take some time for the file to upload.
- Click Import All Components.
4. Export: Export course as Brightspace Package
Instructors can export a course into a package that can be imported into other D2L instances.
For example, you can export a course to import into D2L Community. Not all course components will export.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to export materials FROM and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click Export as Brightspace Package.
- Click Start.
- Select the checkbox next to Select All Components to export the entire course, or select individual components you wish to include.
- Click Continue.
- Scroll down to the bottom and make sure you check Include course files in the export package
- Verify your selections and click Export.
- Click Done and wait for a notification in the Update Alerts (bell icon).
- Select the Export finished notification from Update Alerts.
- Select Click here to download the export Zip package to download.
- Save the file on your computer.
- Click Done.
5. Export: Export course as Common Cartridge
Instructors can export a course into a file that can be imported into another Learning Management System.
Not all course components will export.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to export materials FROM and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click Export as Common Cartridge.
- Click Start.
- Select the checkbox next to Select All Components to export the entire course, or select individual components you wish to include.
- Click Continue.
- Verify your selections on the next page and click Export.
- Click Done and wait for a notification in the Update Alerts (bell icon).
- Select the Export finished notification from Update Alerts.
- Select Click here to download the export Zip package to download.
- Save the file on your computer.
- Click Done.
6. Export: Export course as Thin Common Cartridge
Instructors can export external learning tools into a file that can be imported into another Learning Management System.
Not all course components will export.
- Go to the D2L course site you want to export materials FROM and click Course Admin.
- Select Import/Export/Copy Components.
- Click Export as Thin Common Cartridge.
- Click Start.
- Select the checkbox next to Select All Components to export the entire course, or select individual components you wish to include.
- Click Continue.
- Verify your selections on the next page and click Export.
- Click Done and wait for a notification in the Update Alerts (bell icon).
- Select the Export finished notification from Update Alerts.
- Select Click here to download the export Zip package to download.
- Save the file on your computer.
- Click Done.
